Pineapple Rye Pale Ale using Amoretti Pineapple and a new Jaded Brewing Scylla chiller – Part 2 of 2

We’re calling this one “Island of Lost Souls – Pineapple Rye Pale Ale” Island of Lost Souls is based on the song by Blondie my favorite band. Ultimately we added 4 ounces by weight of Amoretti Artisan Pineapple Natural Flavoring.

2nd Brew on our Anvil Foundry 10.5 gallon setup with the pump kit also I recently purchased from Jaded Brewing a Scylla chiller.

Our Recipe for the Island of Lost Souls Pineapple Rye Pale Ale 5 Gallon batch (5.25 gallons collected to account for loss) – 19 Liters
7.5 lbs Golden Promise Pale Ale Malt ( Kilograms)
8 oz Rye Malt (.23 Kilograms)
8 oz Crystal 20L (.23 Kilograms)
8 oz Cara Pils (.23 Kilograms)
1 oz Citra Whole Leaf (14.3% Alpha) (28.3 grams) at 90 mins
1 oz El Dorado (12.5% Alpha) (28.3 grams) at 5 mins
10 minute additions:
Added 1 heaping tsp of Wyeast Yeast Nutrient
Added 4 oz cooled wort with 1/4 tsp of Super Moss HB Pitched
Omega OYL-200 Tropical IPA Yeast and fermented for 2 weeks at 68F
(Fully fermented out within less than 48 hours.)
Dry hop for 7 days
1 oz Kohatu (8.1% Alpha) (28.3 grams)
1 oz Danali (15.5% Alpha) (28.3 grams)

Awesome propane burner – Great quality. 
Five Star Super Moss HB
Wyeast Yeast Nutrient
Gelatin – cheap bulk for clarifying
Hop filter for brewing
Glass Carboy
Plastic Carboy for measuring
Tilt Hydrometer during fermentation
Best Hydrometer I’ve ever used and a great company
Hop filter for dry hopping
Air pumping to help add oxygen to your wort

Rye Pale Ale from Terrapin Beer Co

Rye Pale Ale from Terrapin Beer Company out of Athen’s GA is one of my personal favorites for a nice sessionable craft brew that has a ton of great flavor and complexity. This amazing brew pours an amazing deep red almost amber in color with a nice off-white head that seems to stand on its own for a good bit before you go to take your first sip. With that first sip of this amazing rye pale ale you notice hints or citrus on your nose and you can almost smell the rye and caramel but once you do take a nice swig you will immediately notice it seems like this craft beer taste the caramel, rye and honey malts which blend together perfectly to give you a smooth bit complex rye pale ale. At only 5.5 ABV and 35 IBU (taste more like a 45) this can easily become your goto session beer without question. Terrapin is known for their use of rye in their beers and I believe they have become the masters of adding rye to any beer and making it work perfectly adding just the right amount for character and that pepper bite rye is known for. If you haven’t tried a Rye Pale Ale from Terrapin Beer Company you must put this on your short list of beer to try.

Lost Cove American Pale Ale by Highland Brewing Company

Extremely light in color compared to most Pale Ales and a little high on the carbonation but the biggest impression was all the Cascade hop smell as I went to take a sip, it was as if I had fresh hops floating on top of the brew. Lost Cove American Pale Ale by Highland Brewing Company is a bit different with its lighter body, high carbonation, major hop forward smell and taste but shockingly it is only rated at 20 IBU with the bitter of a smooth 40 IBU Pale Ale. Most pales ales have a bitter more like an IPA but Lost Cove American Pale Ale nailed it for what a pale ale should taste like. This is a great session pale ale at only 4.5% ABV, lighter body from the mild Pilsner malt blend with all the citrus aroma and smooth bittering makes this a pale ale to try this Summer. I personally was impressed as Highland Brewing Company makes some great beers but most have a lot more malt flavor and as I poured the Lost Cove American Pale Ale I became a bit concerned until my nose hit the citrus aromas from the hops and after the first sip all concern changed to a pleasant surprise.

Stone Pale Ale 2.0 from Stone Brewing

First impression when opening a Stone Ale is you expect quality and the Stone Pale Ale 2.0 from Stone Brewing is no exception. After pouring to a nice mild yellow head and slightly foggy dark copper color you take notice of the sweet caramel scent before taking your first sip. This Stone Pale Ale 2.0 from Stone Brewing could easily give most IPAs a run for their money with its hop forward flavors as you taste lush citrus notes including grapefruit mixed with a little stone fruit complimented with lots of spicy rye flavor all shared with the bitter of a 55 IBU that really seems much higher from the Magnum, Herkules and Mandarina Bavaria hops. If you love rye beers and IPA this one would make a great session beer at only 6% and compliment any spicy dish you can think of.
